Have you ever asked why there are foot plates on shoes?
London architect Julian Hakes suggest there’s really no need for them as his organic-looking and very stylish ‘Mojito’ shoe proves. The design consists of a single piece that wraps around the wearer’s foot, forming support for the heel and ball in a most elegant way.
Hakes came up with the idea when he was observing foot prints in sand. He realised that the force of movement was mainly through the heel and ball, meaning that the foot plate on shoes is bascially unnecessary.
The wraparound shoes are made of carbon fibre with rubber for soles and leather on the sides that wrap and revolve around the foot, supporting the heel and the ball while the foot acts as a bridge between the two.
Will we see Hakes’ wraparound shoes on the catwalks next season? This is the finished product:
