This astonishing film was actually made on the ice skates of Dutch photographer and film maker Kasper Bak in Lemmer, a town in the north of Holland.
Music: ‘Ice Dance’ by Paul Reeves
Photographer Erik Eti Smit said about his photo on top of this story:
It is our national myth that in the olden days the canals were frozen from December till March, every winter. And when I was little, a sight such as this one was still quite common. We could skate almost every winter. Or maybe I just remember the winters when we had ice – and it certainly wasn’t the whole winter.

And what do the Eskimos think about ice?
You never really know your friends from your enemies until the ice breaks.
(Eskimo proverb)
